Like many other cities in the country, the population of Bahir Dar has been growing at an alarming rate every year. According to the census conducted at various times, the first round of the census in 1976 was 54,766 in the second round of the 1986 census. The population and housing census has increased to 94,235.

Based on the results of the 1999 census, the population of Bahir Dar, which was projected for 5 years of age, single age and gender, is 414763, of which 49421 live in rural areas and 365,342 in urban areas. Of these, the number of males is 201904 and the number of females is 212859. The population density is estimated at 0.12 per hectare.
